Fortnightly 170

Fortnightly 170 has now headed off to subscribers. It’s the final one of this academic year, though ‘The Occasional’ (a similar kind of an affair, an off-shoot), will be sent to paid subscribers on a couple of occasions in July and August.

170 starts with a piece about classes my colleague John and I taught over 25 years ago on Henry James’s The Portrait of a Lady. Plus my recent Irish Times article on ‘rote learning’ and the Leaving Certificate: short novels by Sarah Gilmartin and Max Porter, Robert Eaglestone interviewing Carol Atherton about Reading Lessons, D. Graham Burnett on ‘attention’, Alex Quigley’s new book Why Learning Fails (and what to do about it), Rachel Cusk, Richard Barmfield, and Morecambe and Wise with Tom Jones.

170: Perfect classes, mind-fracking by Julian Girdham

Henry James, 'rote learning', Sarah Gilmartin, Max Porter & more.
